Obituary

Neil A. Mayfield, 86, of Newton, died Monday, January 21, 2019, at Newton Medical Center.

Born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado, Neil moved to Joliet, Illinois, where he lived for a short time before settling in New Jersey. He was a United States Army veteran, proudly serving from 1949 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict. A packaging specialist at Picatinny Arsenal, Neil worked for the federal government for over forty years, the majority of which was at Picatinny, before his retirement in 1995.

Neil was a former Scoutmaster who was the founder of Troop 111 in Jefferson. He enjoyed working with leather, stamp collecting, making home videos and taking pictures. He also enjoyed going to Yetter’s Diner for breakfast, taking car rides and walks, but especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. A true cowboy at heart, Neil loved everything country and also loved his animals, especially his darling cat, Midnight.

The son of the late Earnest M. and Lavina (nee Dipert) Looker, Neil was also predeceased by his wife, Maxine, in 2011. He is survived by his children, Barry N. Mayfield, Sr., and wife, Rebecca, Larry Neil Mayfield and wife, Betty Lou, Mark Charles Mayfield and wife, Terri, Jeff Mayfield and wife, Suzette, and Laura J. Mayfield Davenport and husband, Jay; his stepdaughter, Kelly Decker and husband, James; as well as his grandchildren, Barry N. Jr., Olivia, Kalee, PJ, Samantha, Ethan, Crystal, Erin, Destiny, Katelyn, Staci, Stephanie, Jacob J., Makenzi, and Sam. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Mayfield and wife, Maddy.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton, with a 7 p.m. Funeral Service followed by Military Honors. Burial of cremains will be held in Newton Cemetery in the Spring.
